Privacy Is the Problem This Technology Is Best Placed to Solve

At ETH Taipei 2025 I saw even more significant and exciting progress than last year, and met developers from Europe, the Philippines, and New York. But the applications that stayed with me were the ones aimed at a problem Web2 has never solved.

In today’s Web2 world, privacy breaches are rampant — search “data breach” on Google, and you’ll find endless news stories. Companies, governments, and websites, intentionally or not, leak user data, often without users’ knowledge; the phone list of a fraud group is the best example. This is an urgent issue.

Self was the application that made the case concretely. It leverages cryptographic techniques like Zero Knowledge Proofs to address privacy issues in identity verification: users can verify their identity anywhere without revealing personal documents or information, significantly reducing the risk of data breaches. Integrated with blockchain services, it could further enhance privacy and fit seamlessly into the broader ecosystem. That is the shape of the argument I find persuasive — not “put this on-chain”, but “prove the fact without handing over the document”.

Plumbing Still Decides Whether Anything Above It Works

The other application I keep thinking about, Portus, is much less philosophically interesting and probably more immediately useful. It is a cross-chain token swapping tool that finds the best exchange rates without users spending time comparing options manually, and it supports a massive transaction volume per second. The promise is greater liquidity across chains — a win for the platform, for swap users, and for the various chain communities.

I file this under infrastructure rather than product, and that is the point. Cross-chain and token conversions remain complex, and the user experience is often unfriendly. Until that layer is boring, the layer above it cannot be simple.

Open Source Funding Decides What Gets Built at All

In his speech, Vitalik Buterin emphasized the role of public goods in Ethereum’s success. Ethereum thrives as an open-source project, built through the collective efforts of companies, non-profits, and individual developers. Many of Ethereum’s technologies and projects can be considered “public goods” — resources where one person’s benefit doesn’t diminish others’. The future of Ethereum hinges on this principle.

The open-source world faces a paradox, though: critical open-source projects often struggle to generate revenue, which makes it hard to attract and retain talent. Creating a sustainable funding flywheel — where successful projects fund the next generation — is vital for the ecosystem’s growth. Currently, many blockchain projects remain profit-driven private ventures, while promising open-source initiatives lack sufficient support, and that hinders their growth. This is not a side topic to the two applications above; it bears directly on whether work like theirs can keep going.

The Adoption Gap Is an Application-Layer Gap

Despite blockchain’s progress, adoption remains limited due to technical, regulatory, and application-layer challenges. Most decentralized applications are still focused on gaming and financial transactions, and fail to reach broader audiences, leaving many people unaware of blockchain’s potential.

For technology to go mainstream, it must address pain points simply and quickly, or create compelling, innovative use cases. Currently, blockchain lacks both: there aren’t enough intuitive, pain-point-solving apps, nor groundbreaking new ones. Many efforts focus on upgrading Web2 apps to Web3, which may not be enough. This is an area ripe for further exploration.

What I Take Away

Vitalik opened his speech with a thought-provoking question: “If Ethereum’s price had never skyrocketed, would you still be here?”

It is a good filter, and it is the one I would apply to everything above — and to the consensus, scarcity and utility I later used to examine Bitcoin’s value. Understanding Ethereum’s ethos and vision reveals a value far beyond its market price. As someone who resonates with this vision, I’m committed to staying and contributing to this journey.

在今天的 Web2 世界,隱私外洩層出不窮——在 Google 搜尋「資料外洩」,新聞多到看不完。企業、政府與網站有意或無意地洩漏使用者資料,而使用者往往毫不知情;詐騙集團手上的電話名單就是最好的例子。這是個急迫的問題。

Self 是把這個論點具體化的應用。它運用零知識證明這類密碼學技術處理身分驗證中的隱私問題:使用者可以在任何地方驗證自己的身分,而不必揭露個人證件或資訊,大幅降低資料外洩的風險。若與區塊鏈服務整合,還能進一步強化隱私,並無縫嵌入更大的生態系。這正是我覺得有說服力的論證形狀——重點不是「把這個放上鏈」,而是「證明這件事為真,但不用把證件交出去」。

底層管線仍決定上面那層能不能運作

另一個我一直想著的應用 Portus,在哲學上遠沒那麼有趣,但大概更立即有用。它是一個跨鏈代幣兌換工具,能找到最好的匯率,使用者不必自己花時間比價,而且支援極高的每秒交易量。它承諾的是跨鏈之間更充裕的流動性——對平台、對兌換使用者、對各條鏈的社群都是好事。

我把它歸類為基礎設施而非產品,而這正是重點。跨鏈與代幣轉換依然複雜,使用體驗常常不友善。在那一層變得無聊之前,它上面那一層不可能變簡單。

開源的資助決定了什麼東西根本會被做出來

Vitalik Buterin 在演講中強調公共財對以太坊成功的作用。以太坊之所以蓬勃,是因為它是一個開源專案,由企業、非營利組織與獨立開發者共同投入所建成。以太坊的許多技術與專案都可以視為「公共財」——一個人享用不會減損他人享用的資源。以太坊的未來繫於這個原則。

不過開源世界面臨一個弔詭:關鍵的開源專案往往難以產生收入,因此難以吸引與留住人才。打造一個能持續運轉的資助飛輪——讓成功的專案資助下一代——對生態系的成長至關重要。目前許多區塊鏈專案仍是以獲利為導向的私人事業,而有潛力的開源計畫卻缺乏足夠支持,這阻礙了它們的成長。這不是前面兩個應用之外的旁枝話題;它直接關係到那樣的工作能不能持續下去。

採用的落差是應用層的落差

儘管區塊鏈持續進展,採用率仍受限於技術、法規與應用層的挑戰。多數去中心化應用仍集中在遊戲與金融交易,觸及不到更廣的受眾,也讓許多人不知道區塊鏈的潛力所在。

一項技術要走向主流,得簡單而快速地解決痛點,或創造出足夠吸引人的創新用途。目前區塊鏈兩者都還不夠:既沒有夠直覺、能解決痛點的應用,也沒有開創性的新應用。許多努力集中在把 Web2 應用升級成 Web3,這恐怕還不夠。這個領域仍值得繼續挖。

我的收穫

Vitalik 以一個發人深省的問題開場:「如果以太坊的價格從來沒有暴漲,你還會在這裡嗎?」

這是個好用的篩子,也是我會拿來檢視上面所有東西的那一個——以及我後來用來檢視比特幣價值的共識、稀缺性與用途。理解以太坊的精神與願景,會看見遠超過市場價格的價值。作為一個認同這個願景的人,我願意留下來,繼續參與這段旅程。
